The Éléonore Gold Mine: The Discovery That Built the James Bay Gold District
Every great exploration district has a mine that proved the thesis. In Quebec’s Eeyou Istchee James Bay region, that mine is Éléonore. Its discovery transformed a remote stretch of the Canadian Shield into one of the country’s most active exploration districts, and its two decades of development and production built much of the infrastructure, workforce, and institutional knowledge that explorers in the region, including Lux Metals Corp. (TSXV: LXM) at the La Grande Gold Project, benefit from today.
This article covers the discovery, development, and ownership history of Éléonore, what it demonstrated about James Bay geology, and where La Grande sits within the district the mine anchored.
How was the Éléonore deposit discovered?
The Éléonore story begins with a boulder trail. In 2002, exploration crews from Virginia Gold Mines, working near a copper showing first identified by Noranda in 1964, traced a trail of mineralized boulders that included a grab sample grading 22.9 g/t gold. Following the boulders up-ice to their source led to the discovery of the Roberto deposit in 2004.
It remains one of the most celebrated grassroots discoveries in modern Canadian exploration. Virginia followed up through 2005 with an aggressive program, including some 53,000 metres of diamond drilling in a single campaign, that confirmed the Roberto system over 1.9 kilometres laterally and to a vertical depth of 900 metres.
Who owns the Éléonore mine? A complete ownership history
Éléonore has passed through some of the biggest names in gold mining:
- Virginia Gold Mines made the discovery in 2004. In December 2005, Virginia and Goldcorp executed a friendly agreement under which Goldcorp would acquire the Éléonore project.
- Goldcorp completed the acquisition on March 31, 2006, in a share transaction valued at approximately US$420 million. Virginia shareholders received Goldcorp shares plus shares in a spun-out exploration company, Virginia Mines, which retained a sliding-scale net smelter return royalty on Éléonore of 2.2% on the first three million ounces produced, rising to a maximum of 3.5%.
- Osisko Gold Royalties acquired Virginia Mines in a deal announced in November 2014, valued at approximately C$479 million, with the Éléonore royalty as one of its two cornerstone assets. The discoverers were rewarded twice: once at the sale to Goldcorp, and again when the royalty anchored a leading royalty company.
- Newmont Corporation assumed ownership of the mine through its acquisition of Goldcorp, completed in April 2019.
- Dhilmar Ltd, a UK-based private mining company, agreed on November 25, 2024 to acquire Éléonore from Newmont for US$795 million in cash, as part of Newmont’s divestiture of non-core assets. The sale completed in March 2025.
The Dhilmar transaction is worth pausing on. A private mining company paid nearly US$800 million in cash for a single James Bay gold operation in 2025. That price confirms that serious capital continues to see long-term value in the district’s gold endowment.
How much gold does Éléonore produce?
Goldcorp developed Éléonore with an investment of approximately US$1.8 billion. First gold was poured on October 1, 2014, and commercial production was achieved on April 1, 2015. The processing plant started at 3,500 tonnes per day and was expanded to 7,000 tonnes per day in 2018, with a production shaft reaching 1,190 metres below surface.
The underground mine is one of the largest gold mines in Quebec, with annual output of approximately 215,000 ounces of gold per recent public reporting. At mid-2016, the operation reported mineral reserves of 4.57 million ounces of gold (23.44 Mt at 6.07 g/t Au), a genuinely multi-million-ounce system.
What did Éléonore prove about James Bay?
Before Éléonore, James Bay was known primarily as hydroelectric country, home to Hydro-Quebec’s La Grande complex. The Roberto discovery and the mine that followed demonstrated three things that reshaped how the industry views the region:
- The geology delivers. The Superior Province rocks of James Bay host gold systems of genuine scale. The Roberto deposit sits near the tectonometamorphic contact between the La Grande and Opinaca subprovinces, and that contact corridor has been a primary exploration target in James Bay ever since the discovery.
- Remote does not mean unworkable. Hydro-Quebec’s road, airstrip, and power network, built for the hydroelectric projects, gives James Bay a level of infrastructure most frontier districts cannot match, and Éléonore proved a US$1.8 billion underground mine could be built and operated on it.
- Partnership frameworks exist. The Opinagow Collaboration Agreement, signed in February 2011 between Goldcorp, the Cree Nation of Wemindji, the Grand Council of the Crees (Eeyou Istchee), and the Cree Regional Authority, established a framework covering training, employment, business opportunities, and environmental matters, and has been cited as a model for collaboration between industry and First Nations in the region.
The years since have reinforced the district’s standing. Billions of dollars have flowed into James Bay exploration, most visibly during the lithium boom that produced Patriot Battery Metals’ Corvette discovery, alongside advanced projects from Critical Elements Lithium Corporation and Winsome Resources. Gold, the metal that anchored the district, is now drawing renewed attention.
Where is the La Grande Project relative to Éléonore?
The La Grande Gold Project sits within the same regional belt as the producing Éléonore mine, in the heart of the Eeyou Istchee James Bay district. The Project lies approximately 85 kilometres southeast of Radisson, the regional service hub, and is transected by the all-season Transtaiga Road, with Hydro-Quebec’s LG-3 airstrip directly east of the Property and a high-voltage transmission line crossing it.
There is also a striking geological parallel. The Roberto deposit sits near the boundary between the La Grande and Opinaca subprovinces, and the La Grande Project sits on that same subprovince boundary within the Superior Province. The deposit styles differ: Roberto is a clastic sediment-hosted stockwork-disseminated gold system, while the Zone 32 gold system at La Grande is interpreted as a shear-zone, intrusion-hosted Archean orogenic gold system, the deposit family responsible for many of the Superior Province’s most productive gold camps. What the two share is the address: the same Archean craton, the same district-scale structural architecture, and the same infrastructure advantages that made Éléonore economic to build and operate.

What comes next in the district?
For Lux Metals, the next chapter is the 2026 exploration program at La Grande: an initial 5,000 metre diamond drill campaign at Zone 32 anticipated to commence in Q3 2026, alongside surface work across the Project’s 40 kilometre trend.
